The Grand Finals took place at Bedlington WMC on Thursday August 26 with sponsorship from The Newcastle Beer Company and The Coors Brewers. Sixteen of the regions top dart players (who would grace the stage of any competition in the country) were on hand hoping to capture the £1,000 winners prize from the total of £3,000 that was on offer in this the most popular and prestigious darts tournament in the region.
Gateshead's Davy Richardson set the pace with a first round win over Ian Gleeson, while Scotland's John Stephenson took advantage of poor finishing by Dave Gradwell, Roger Brown had a hard fought win over Arthur Dobey. Gary Robson took the spoils against Paul Williams, while Paul Knighton from Durham was pushed all the way by Keith Wright, whose 158 checkout in the 6th leg of 7 just wasn't enough on this occasion. Last year's champion Gordon Dobey got off to a great start with a 4-0win over Davy Prins. Paul Jennings and Glen Durrant both progressed to the next round with good wins over Graeme Stoddart and Tony Wood.
In the quarter finals, Richardson and Robson kept up their good work with victories against John Stephenson and Roger Brown respectively. Paul Knighton was too strong for Gordon Dobey as was Glen Durant against Paul Jennings. Although Dobey had the best leg of the night with a ten dart leg.
Richardson an Robson were first up in the semi finals, Richardson took an early two leg lead, Robson reduced the deficit but to no avail as Richardson took the first Grand Final place with a 4-2 victory.
The second semi final between Knighton and Durant kepy everyone on the edge of their seats, Knighton taking the early spoils but could not get clear of a determined Durant. Heavy scoring would prove decisive as the Durham lad took his chances with a 4-2 win.
In the final nerves did not seem evident as Richardson went off with a 180 and a 140 in a 17 dart winning leg. Knighton responded immediately with a 140. 100 and 85 to level the scores. Richardson kept up the pressure with scores of 99, 140 and 107, securing a 2-1 lead. Knighton had his own idea of pressure blistering in a 180, 140, 83 and a 98 checkout in 12 darts to make the score 2-2. Richardson went back in front with a nervous fifth leg once again prompting a devastating response from Knighton, 140, 140. 180 checking out with 41 in another 12 dart leg, taking the final all the way. Scores of 95, 100, 140 from Richardson were enough to secure his fourth win in this competition.
Presenting the prizes on behalf of the sponsors The Newcastle Beer Company and The Coors Brewers were Mark McCann, Paul Smith and Norman Williams.
The non qualifying competition was won by Alan George wh beat John Hardman in the final.

The grand finals of the Ian Whilis memorial trophy, sponsored by Coors Brewers took place at Bedlington Station WMC on Monday night 23 August with top players from the region hoping to secure the £600 winners prize from the £1,500 total prizemoney.
In the first round, Gary Robson proved too strong for Robbie Parker, as was Paul Knighton in a 4-3 win over Gordon Dobey. Davey Prins got the better of Keith Fletcher and Matty Willis was too powerful for Roger Brown. Mark Stephenson and Arthur Dobey progressed with wins against Steve Wanless and Alan George. Chris Lisle had a good win against Graeme Stoddart and Alan Davie had too much in the locker for Paul Bell. In the quarter finals BDO World Rank Number 4 player, Gary Robson took his chances to defeat Durham's Paul Knighton in a tight game. Last year's World Championship qualifier Dave Prins won his quarter final with a tough 4-2 win over Mattie Willis.
Arthur Dobey fought his way in to the semi finals with a powerful display against Mark Stephenson. Alan Davie was impressive in his game against Chris Lisle to give him a semi finals place. The first semi final saw Davie take a 3-0 lead in a best of 7 legs game with consistent high scoring. Then Dobie found his range too and clawed back the next 3 legs to level the score at 3-3, but it was to no avail as Davie powered in a blistering 13 dart winning leg to set up a finals place. The second finals spot would go to Gary Robson, who took an early lead against Davy Prins with an 18 and 15 dart leg. Prins came back into the game with a 15 dart winning leg only to see Robson increase his lead with a 16 dart game. Powerful scoring and smart finishing kept Prins in the tie as he reduced the deficit again. But with players feeling the pressure it was Robson who held his nerve to take the spiols with a nervous 20 dart game to book his place in the finals.
The finals started slowly and Davey took the initiative with scores of 8,134 and 140 helping to secure the first leg. 2 scores of 96 and 180 from Robson made the scores level with a 14 dart game. Another tight leg put Davey back in the league with a 17 dart leg. Once again Robson hit back 125, 100 and 180 doing the trick in another 14 dart game. He followed this with 95, 180, 97, 89 double top to take the lead with a 13 darter. Davey clicked back into gear with 100, 80, 140, 85 scores in 15 darts taking the game to sudden death. It was Robson who shone in this leg with 80, 93, 58 folowed by his 4th 180 of the final to leave 90, which he duly took out with bullseye, double top in a championship 14 dart winning game.
Mr Lloyd Jones, representing the sponsors Coors Brewers, presented all the players with their prizes on the night.
The none qualifiers prize went to Ian Dawson who beat Mickey Luke by 3-2 in their final.
